Supporting Autistic Children & their families

What is autism?

Autism is a difference in the way the brain is wired. It impacts how autistic people perceive the environment, process experiences, and communicate with others. Many autistic individuals also experience differences in their senses, sometimes finding sights, sounds, or textures overwhelming, while seeking out other certain sensory experiences. Autism is a lifelong condition however with the right support, autistic children and young people can thrive and make progress reach their true potential and aspirations.

How we can support your autistic child

Every child’s experience of autism is unique, which is why therapy should always be tailored to their individual strengths and challenges. At The Yorkshire Speechie, we use a child-led approach to supporting our young people. Our neurodiversity affirming approach allow us to work with your family to consider emotional regulation, social communication and consider how your child communicates; this may include spoken word, nonverbal communication such as gestures and signing, gestalt phrases and Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC).

For lots of autistic children, our child-led sessions provide a safe and joyful way to connect through play they love! These sessions foster true connection which builds emotional regulation and attention skills which are the foundations of language development. Depending on your child, we may support their language development through play by modelling words or phrases, offering motivating opportunities to communicate in any way that is right for them, or developing their communication using alternative modes of communication e.g., objects, symbols, photos.

All of our new children require an initial assessment prior to child-led therapy. This allows our therapist to identify your child's strengths, areas of interest and individual differences to ensure a high standard of care that is tailored to them.
